I went out on a limb last week while speaking to Ryan Rivera, a News Initiative journalist 'fellow' from California about Latino Vote in Colorado. He asked, are Latinos going to sit out this election or vote for McCain? I replied, heck no! Latinos will be out in force. They wouldn't dare miss this historic election. No way. And they will support our Democratic nominee, Barack Obama. No, I don't have any poll or other data to back that up - yet.
Well, apparently a recent NBC/WSJ poll supports me. Whew! Chuck Todd reports this morning at First Read:
But it looks like that CW -- at least right now -- was wrong. In addition to our recent NBC/WSJ poll, which showed Hispanics breaking for Obama 62%-28%, a new survey of 800 Latino voters from 21 states finds that 60% of them plan to vote for Obama versus 23% for McCain. That is down considerably from the 40%-plus Bush received in 2004. It's no longer fair to say that Obama has a problem with Latino voters; McCain does. This was a case of conventional wisdom that was never based on fact, just semi-informed speculation based on primary exit polling and bad stereotypes of Latinos.
Commenter on Politico.com speaking about the tactical turns in the Democratic primary/caucus process. Politico reports that the Clinton campaign will attempt to turn pledged delegates elected at caucus to their side by the time of the state/cd conventions.
Now, I don't know about you, but I don't know any pledges in my area who are on the fence about Sen. Obama. I think they will go with him all the way to the state convention. Read full story at Politico.com.
A Progressive Latina Voice with a Passion for Spicy Green Chile in her Politics
Green Chile Democrats editor Debbie K. Marquez lives in the high country of Colorado, 100 miles west of Denver. I have been Democratic Party official in my county and currently serve as a Democratic National Committeewoman from Colorado. I consider myself a progressive, liberal
My sister & I own a well-known, successful restaurant in the Vail area and serve up some tasty New Mexican/Colorado style food - authentic- made-from-scratch-recipes just like our Abuelita (Grandma) Luna taught us using fresh ingredients like New Mexico red chile peppers.
Posting stories and writing about issues that impact the Latino/a, Chicano, Mexican-American, La Raza population is my side dish. The recent state laws against the immigrant community put forth by Colorado's special session on immigration has compelled me to begin this diary to inform and inspire members of our community to become politically active within the Democratic Party and political system in general. Although the 2006 estimated Latino population in Colorado is nearly 20%, the number of Latino legislators is only 6%.
Let's get to cooking up some spicy Latina/o political action in Colorado and the Mountain West!
